Supplements and Adverts
This is my second supplement, a local football league pull out, advertisement. I chose to do this because it was easy to link to local people and is a common interest of local newspaper readers, found in my research.
I Started off with the top design and in the end developed it into the second design. I ended up making these changes while making my poster. I wanted to make it look eye catching and stylish and be able to link my newspaper and poster together.

Used Photos
I took this picture for the quote boxes on the second page of my main story. This was a idea I took from my research and I think it is a good way to present it because it highlights the opinions that the readers will care about. This model is posing as the Bristol City captain as is taken in the same place as the real portrait pictures of the squad for authenticity.
As you can see there are two versions of this photo. The top picture is the original and the the bottom one is the adapted version. I cropped the original to cut down on the unnecessary amount of background and to centre the subject more in the picture. It also turns the shot into more of a close up instead of a more medium shot. This also helped it fit into the "vox pop" format. I tried not to use to much photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop in my pictures because it is unrealistic to see this in a local newspaper. However, i edited the brightness and contrast of the photo to make it look more crisp and professional.
This is a picture of the actual area where the new Bristol City stadium is being built. I took this picture from a number of different locations and this is the one that turned out best. A high level of zoom was required in the taking of this shot as the public cannot get any closer than where I was stood at this moment in time. This picture has good lighting and is a good example of a extreme long shot and use of a zoom shot. It serves its purpose, giving the reader a idea of where the new stadium is and what stage of development it is at.
This picture was used as the main picture on my second page. It shows the Bristol City captain standing outside of the old stadium. I used a low angle on this shot to make him look bigger and more dominant showing his power as captain of the team. The picture was taken just outside of the entry gates to the Bristol City Stadium showing that its time is coming to an end. I also used a world cup football in the captains hands to connect it to the story and Bristol City’s future.
The picture above is another extreme longshot and was used for the main picture on my front page and my main story. I decided to use a picture like this because it links to the story really well. It shows the dolman stand at the current Bristol City stadium and also shows in the writing on the stand “Bristol City”. I thought this was good because it is a familiar site to the fans and immediately shows the reader what the story will be about.
I went along at about 17:00 in the day so that the shadow would be covering the pitch and the sun would be shinning on the stand, highlighting “Bristol City” on the stand. This also helps catch the reader’s eye and any passersby to the newspaper stand will hopefully want to pick the paper up.
I think this is my most interesting photo out of all that I have taken for this project. It is an action shot at medium range taken of my local photo team in the league cup. It was a great shot to use for my supplement advertisement because it shows the hustle and passion of local league football.
This photo was used for the sub story on my second page. It is a medium shot but was taken on a camera phone so the quality has been affected. Again I changed the brightness and contrast of the photo to attempt to make it look sharper. I took this during the later stages of the Bristol Half Marathon as the runner was more likely to be look like he had been working hard but still have a determined expression on his face. This was important because in my article he is the winner of the race so it is important to catch him at the right point and make sure the model looked athletic and fit.
I used this picture for my advertisement on my newspaper second page. The advert is advertising accommodation so it was important to make the place look as desirable as possible. I took the photo at about 11:00 in the morning when the skies were clear and it was sunny to make the harbour look more attractive. I used a extreme longshot which allowed me show a good overview of the area.

Unused Photos
This photo was for one of my sub-stories “Running for a record”. I took this at a different race and as my story is for the half marathon I decided to have this as a back up just in case my pictures from the marathon weren’t good enough
This picture was not used simply because I had the time to take multiple shots so I chose the best one out of the lot. The other photo is not so grainy and is farming a better area.
This is a photo of the Williams stand. This idea behind this photo was to take a picture of where all the directors sit as they are the main players in the decisions made for the new stadium. However, as I couldn’t get any suitable models to act as the chairman of the football club and the council I decided not to use the photo at all.
This picture is of the far corner of Ashton Gate. I thought about using this for a second page picture as it shows the pitch cordoned off which relates to the closure of the stadium to be replaced by a new one. However, I decided not to because it was to late in the day and the shadow had dropped on the pitch in an undesired way. Also the stadium is not framed very well in the picture, there is to much sky and not enough of the ground itself.
The picture above shows a backdrop of the Dolman stand at Ashton Gate, Bristol City’s home stadium. This is a good backdrop but the lighting is a bit to dark and the “Bristol City” written on the stand in the background is not fully shown.
The photo above was a good idea of a photo and was executed well, the light was good and the background suits the purpose as well. The only problem with it is that the models eyes are closed which ruins the entire shot. It was unfortunate that my time was restricted inside the stadium which didn’t allow time for multiple shots. If I could do this again I would plan my photos in more detail so I knew the exact few shots I wanted.
This photo was unsuitable for use because of the dark lighting which makes the picture look unprofessional and gloomy. The weather is also unsuitable because it makes the picture look dull and changes the viewer’s perception. If it is sunny the viewer has a positive outlook on the picture but as it is not the reader will have a more negative outlook on the picture and see it in a totally different way.
This photo is similar to the picture I used for my main story on my second page. I decided not to use it because it is not framed as well as the other and has part of a car showing in the corner. Also the pose of the model used was not was I was looking for and his expression is not portraying the happy emotion I was looking for.

Writing and Design
I have got rid of the stories "Performance at Pier opening" and "Party at pool to celebrate season" because of the lack of pictures available to get but have changed them into other real life events, "Bank holiday hold up due to suicide jump" and "Marathon winner backs Olympic bid" - which is my only fictional story.
I have also designed and made my adverts and two supplement "splashes" to correspond to the adverts i have seen in my local paper research.
Peer Assessment
In my peer assessment i was told to compact my title, by getting rid of the big areas of white page to make it look better. I also changed one of my adverts to make it look more professional. On my second page I was told to improve my layout and try and fit in another story. To do this I made my main article slightly smaller and added another article below. I still managed to keep all the same features as before but compact everything and get more in to the same space.

Rough Cut
This is the first production of my front page but with make shift photos to give an idea of what it would look like. This was peer accessed and shown to members of my target audience to get there opinions on what they like and what they didn't.

Mode Of Address-
- Language - Informative and descriptive layered into stories (When, what, who when why in the first paragraph)
- Tone - Friendly (more so than a national or international newspaper) due to the nature of the stories
Content- Local events and news. Ranging from Campaigns for local thing e.g. charity run etc to car crashes in the local area.
Pictures- Of subjects displaying the emotion portrayed in the story
Advertisement- Local Business, Services and events - Normally not big national companies etc. - Take up a high proportion of the newspaper to pay for the running costs.

1. Evening post (Local)
A restaurant and takeaway boss is back in business after a remarkable effort by his loyal customers to make sure they can still get their favourite Chinese food.
Henry Wong's restaurant in Yate had to close down two months ago when he hit financial problems.
But he and his family are so popular that his regulars got together and put up the money so he could carry on in new premises just up the road in Chipping Sodbury. The whip-round brought in £20,000 while many other customers, who didn't have any spare cash but still wanted to do their bit, donated their skills to get the restaurant up and running.
An army of volunteers turned out to do painting and decorating, sort out electrics, stock the kitchen and get the tables ready for the first customers.
Now Henry's Oriental is up and running above the George in Chipping Sodbury's Broad Street, where a party was held to thank everyone involved and wish Henry, his wife Jane, daughter Natalie, 18, and 10-year-old son Harrington the best of luck in his new venture.

An overwhelmed Henry, 40, said: "It's just incredible. I can't believe this has all happened. But when you live in a small community, it's like one big family.
"I've lived in Yate for a long time and my customers are my friends.
"We are very consistent with our food and try to maintain a good standard, which I think is why people like it.
"I hope we will do well in Chipping Sodbury. It certainly looks like we are going to be busy."
The customers who stepped forward to help Henry – his name is Hareton but he's always been known as Henry – have formed a limited company called Dragon Phoenix Catering, with Yate businessman Jeremy Milner and Jane Wong as directors.
Jeremy, who runs Camb Machine Knives International, said: "A couple of months ago I got a text from Henry saying he had to close down the restaurant in Cranleigh Court Road and apologising to his customers.
"Within 24 hours I must have had up to 20 calls from people saying 'We can't let this happen'.
"Despite the economic climate, they were asking how much it would cost to set him up again and a number of people decided to contribute.
"We just wanted to get him back on track. He and his family have no relatives in the UK and he's one of the nicest guys I've ever met. We just couldn't let him leave.
"And anyway my wife, Chris, won't cook for me so I have to get a takeaway four times a week."
Mike Harrington, who runs the George, was keen to let Henry have what used to be a restaurant above the bar and in just seven days, everyone went in to get it ready.
Those who put in cash were prepared to do so without earning any profit but once the business is established, will hand it back to Henry and get their investment back. In the meantime he is employed as manager and will continue to run the restaurant. An outside catering service will also be established.
Henry has four kitchen staff and five waiting staff, including students working part time, and their jobs have also been secured.
Henry said: "I've been in Yate since 1992 and ran the restaurant in Cranleigh Court for 12 years.
"When my friends asked why I hadn't asked for help, I said times were difficult for a lot of people. The next thing I knew, they had come back with the idea of setting up the company."
More than a dozen people made financial contributions, with another 10 or 15 helping in kind.
Yate town councillor Sue Walker said: "Henry is so kind, visiting people when they are in hospital and getting involved in the community.
"We shall miss him not being in Yate but he's not far away and we can still pop up to Chipping Sodbury to support him."
2. The Portishead Mercury (Local)
FIRST he switched on Portishead's Christmas lights – now sales assistant Nigel Parker has become a recording star.
Nigel, who works as a sales assistant at Homebase, was joined by a crowd of fans outside the store to record the fun charity single Oh I Wish I Could See Nigel Everyday.
Residents said the 21-year-old, who has worked at the store for two years, deserved recognition because of his consistently happy and pleasant attitude at the tills.
More than 1,200 people joined the campaign and last month Nigel flicked the switch in front of a 3,000-strong crowd.
Bosses at the hit rock 'n' roll show That'll Be The Day struck on the idea of making the charity record after hearing about Nigel's meteoric rise to stardom.
TIN.adverts.adWriteDC('article-detail-impact-tile', '452x118');
The lyrics to the song – to the tune Oh I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday which was originally recorded by Wizzard – have been changed for the Nigel song by show creator Trevor Payne.
The main verses of the song were recorded by members of the That'll Be The Day cast and on Saturday, dozens of people joined them outside Homebase to record the chorus of the song and be filmed for the video to go with it.
Portishead Town Band also performed and Nigel was recorded talking to staff at the store checkouts and his voice will be dubbed on to the track at certain intervals.
Initially the song and video will go on YouTube, but if demand is high enough, it will be put on to a CD and sold around the town with all the cash raised going to the British Heart Foundation.
Nigel was filmed as part of the video being hugged and kissed by his legion of fans and sang along with the crowds.
He said: "I was thrilled to be asked to do the record – it's something I have never done before and it's all very exciting."
Nigel fans – some wearing their "I Love Nigel" T-shirts – said they were delighted to get involved with the charity single.
Gill and Steve Hall, from Pill, said: "It's great that he is being recognised in this way."
George Long, 22, who set up the Facebook campaign, said it only started as a bit of fun. He said: "I have known Nigel for about six months and he has become a good friend."

Media Skills I Hope To Gain
I have a fair amount of experience writing articles so this will be easier than most for me however, i had never built a newspaper layout and put together all the different aspects of a local newspaper so it will be a good experience and learning curve.

Preperation work before summer holidays and start of term 1
Week 1
Ms Rappel
In our first lesson we looked at the overview of the course and then are coursework unit.
We then looked at question 1b and started off by looking at genre in detail, identifying the different sections (Hybrid, Repertoire of Elements, Iconography, Style, Setting, Narrative, Themes and Audience Response). We also picked a couple of genres and split them up into their sub-genres.
In our next lesson we moved onto Representation. We looked at good and bad stereotypes and talked about dominant beliefs, for example, notion that Native Americans were uncivilised which made their killing and taking of their land seem justified in western films. We created a set of 6 questions which are worth asking, “Who/What is being represented and How?”, “Who is representing them in this way and why?”, “Is it fair and accurate?” and “What opportunities exist for self-representation by the subject?”.
The last thing we did in week 1 was look at the “Public Enemy” movie trailer and “T-pains – Freeze” music video and evaluated the stereotypes and how they are being represented themselves and their music.
Mr Dignan
In our first lesson we looked at an “Adidas Originals” advert and accessed the genre and purpose. We then looked at the regulations of the advert and a complaint that had been made towards it.
We also made a movie trailer checklist of what we thought should always be in a movie trailer. An example of some of these is Movie title, release date, plot (overview), and the stars and so on.
Week 2
Ms Rappel
In this lesson we began to look at Narratives and the difference between plot and narrative. We examined Tzvatan Todorov’s Theory of the basic 3 part structure for all stories. We then applied this theory to a film of our choice and a short Pixar animation.
Mr Dignan
We have now started to look at previous A2 music videos. We looked at the different features and the positive and negatives of each one – reviewed each one.
We also looked at a number of local newspapers and accessed the features. We made a list of what we thought every local newspaper should have and then mind mapped what we found from looking at real ones from different areas in England. We looked at very local newspapers like Portishead “The Mercury” and big city local papers like Manchester.
Week 3
Ms Rappel
We continued to narratives and explored a few more peoples theories (Vladimir Propp’s Theory, William Labov’s Theory and Roland Barthes’s Theory). We tried to apply each theory to a couple of films each.
